Most petitions fail for the same reasons: nobody can tell exactly what is being asked for, or who is being asked. Both are fixable in an afternoon.
Write the ask first
Before the background, before the story, decide the single sentence that says what you want done. If you cannot write it in one sentence, the petition is not ready.
Compare "improve the roads in our area" with "publish a dated repair schedule for the service lane between these two points, and commit to a drainage survey before resurfacing". Only one of those can be agreed to or refused.
A structure that works
- A title that names the place and the ask, so it makes sense on its own in a search result
- One opening paragraph stating the problem and what you want
- The background: what has happened, over what period, and what has already been tried
- The specific requests, as a short list
- Why it matters, in terms of who is affected and how
Be precise about place and time
Name the road, the school, the sector, the union council. "Our area" cannot be inspected. Say how long it has been going on, and what happened when people complained.
What to leave out
Do not accuse named individuals of crimes or corruption. It exposes you to a defamation claim, it cannot be verified, and it will get the petition removed. Describe what happened and let the facts carry it.
Do not invent numbers. A figure you cannot source will be the first thing challenged, and it discredits everything around it. "Several hundred households" that you can stand behind beats a precise figure you cannot.
Before you publish
- Could a stranger tell what you want done, and by whom?
- Is every claim something you could show evidence for?
- Have you named a specific authority?
- Is there anything that identifies someone who has not agreed to be identified?
Common questions
How long should a petition be?
Long enough to make the case and no longer. Most strong petitions are a few hundred words with a short list of specific requests.
Can I write in Urdu?

Can I edit it after publishing?
Only until somebody endorses it. The first endorsement makes a petition permanent, because people signed that particular wording and changing it afterwards would misrepresent what they backed. Substantial edits before that point send it back for review. Get it right before you share it.
